Alcohol and Drug Addiction Treatment Near Memphis, TN

50 years ago, Richard Nixon started “The War on Drugs,” since then nearly 1,000,000 people have died of an overdose. 870,000 of those overdose related deaths occurred in the last 20 years alone.

According to the CDC 88,990 overdose deaths have been reported for the 12-month period ending in October 2020. Because this occurred in the midst of the COVID-19 pandemic, the CDC indicates that this is an underrepresentation of the number of overdose deaths and predicts the number to be closer to 92,000. This is an increase of 20,000 overdoses from the 12-month period a year earlier.

Tennessee is no stranger to overdoses. Ranked 8th in the country for overdose related deaths, Tennessee teens are over two times as likely to be offered drugs in school than teens in similar states.

Tennessee doctors also write more prescriptions than 46 other states. In 2020, over 5 million opioid pain prescriptions were written for Tennessee residents. Dividing this number out individually, that’s 5 out of every 6 people in Tennessee who received an opioid prescription. This is a dangerous precedent, because the CDC reports that 6% of people over the age of 12 misuse their prescription drugs equaling approximately 300,000 people in TN.

In 2019, Tennessee reported just under 2,100 overdose related deaths in the state. The majority of those deaths were men aged 25-45. This number might look small in comparison to the 300,000 people that are predicted to misuse drugs, but over 7,000 of them overdosed requiring an overnight hospital stay. The state dashboard statistics indicate that whites are 5:1 more likely than other ethnicities combined to experience an overdose.

The problem is even more severe at the local level. Shelby county has the second highest number of overdose related deaths in the state, and number one for nonfatal overdoses requiring hospitalization.

Last year Shelby county experienced 268 overdose fatalities and 2,113 overdose hospital related stays accounting for 3% of the state’s total overdoses.

The Shelby County Sheriff’s Office had 552 violations related to substances in 2019. 66% were related to possession, but unlike similar counties, they have a 16% distribution rate. Additionally, Shelby County appears to be fighting a larger variety in terms of types of drugs. 35% of the drug violations were of drugs other than marijuana. And 15% of these violations occurred at an Educational Facility.

In 2019, the Memphis Police Department saw a 1.59% increase in DUI violations totaling 512 incidences. However, MPD saw a 10% decrease in narcotics violations, 2,980.

The city of Memphis, the local Shelby County Government, and the Tennessee State Government are aware of the illicit drug use occurring within their jurisdiction and are working diligently to provide funding and resources to those in need. Spending approximately 2 billion dollars annually on substance abuse, rehabilitation, and recovery Tennessean’s are seeing their tax dollars put to use. Tennessee is currently ranked in the top 10 in the country for rehabilitation availability.

SPECIALIZED CARE FIT FOR YOU

What Should You Look For in a Memphis Rehab?

Selecting the correct drug and alcohol rehab in Memphis could mean the difference between a lifetime of sobriety or relapse. When making a decision about where to attend alcohol and drug rehab in Memphis you should consider the following items: type of treatment, location, type of program, available amenities, and price. By closely considering these factors, you are setting yourself up for successful rehabilitation.

When looking into rehab centers in Memphis, TN for you or a loved one, it is important to consider the type of treatment first. By determining what type of treatment you are looking for, you can quickly determine the rest. Your biggest options are between inpatient and outpatient care. If you select inpatient care, it is residential and you will need to remain at the location for somewhere between 30 and 90 days to complete the program. This is a great option if the world around you seems too overwhelming and unstructured. However, if you select outpatient care, where you attend treatment at a facility, but live at home, your treatment will take considerably longer. This kind of program works well with people who have home support and a structured environment.

Furthermore, if you are seeking relapse care or sober living arrangements, many treatment centers can support you through that time.

The next consideration for drug rehab facilities in Memphis, TN, is the location. There is a 50/50 debate on whether individuals should attend rehabilitation close to home in the environment you’re comfortable with, but filled with the toxicity of alcohol and drugs, or go as far away as you can afford to learn the coping skills and self-care actions necessary to re enter a toxic environment. While neither is better than the other, by selecting the alcohol rehab in Memphis, TN that works for you, you are making a positive decision for your future.

Rehab centers in Memphis, TN offer a variety of therapy programs at their facilities. Traditional evidence-based therapies are prevalent and include cognitive behavioral therapy, dialectical behavioral therapy, and mindfulness therapies. These types of therapy focus on retraining the brain to process situations differently. Drug rehab facilities in Memphis, TN will also offer some unique and alternative therapies that are more creative or specialized. Some facilities will focus on creative arts therapies like art and music, while others will focus on specialized treatment for personality disorders or trauma in relation to substance abuse.

Looking at the available amenities of a rehabilitation center in Memphis, TN means looking at how you would be living or what the facility you would be frequenting looks like. This might not mean much to you, however if you are in an extended program for 90 or more days, the amenities available will be a large part of your life.

Alcohol and drug rehab amenities in Memphis range from boutique treatment in a quaint setting to glorified hospital rooms in a large residential facility. Amenities you might look for are on-site gym or exercise options, spa, how many people you might have to room with, or common area games/resources. When it comes to outpatient care, you could be looking for a facility that offers large seating, video visits, or even open scheduling.

Finally, the last thing that is important to consider is price. While you might feel that price dictates a lot of the above options, you should remember that therapy and some addiction treatment is covered by insurance. You should determine if the facility you are interested in attending accepts your insurance or is willing to work with private payment options.

If you take your time to consider all of these factors, you will find a treatment facility that meets your specific needs.
