WHY DO I NEED TREATMENT?

Overview of Depression

Many people experience depression from time to time. It is not uncommon to experience occasional moments when we feel down or have “the blues.” For the most part, these symptoms generally resolve on their own once the circumstance that led to the unpleasant emotions resolves. However, there are situations where this is not the case. For people with diagnosed depression or major depressive disorder, the feelings of depressed mood are significantly worse than feeling “blue.” The intensity and frequency of depressive symptoms will vary throughout the individual’s life but never fully resolve.

Depression, also referred to as major depressive disorder, is a highly recurring illness. Statistics indicate as many as half of people who experience one episode of major depression will experience one or more additional episodes in their lifetime. Current research also suggests experiencing recurrent episodes will further the risk for recurring symptoms. Statistics show someone who has had two depressive episodes is 70% more likely to experience further depressive episodes.

Many people who struggle with major depression wonder if their symptoms will resolve independently or if there is a way to “cure” depression without seeking help from a depression treatment center. The idea of seeking mental health treatment comes with difficulties. People struggle with fear and worry about the stigma associated with mental health. Some also have concerns about being seen as different than peers or concerns about taking medications. While the passage of time can indeed reduce the impacts of some life events, it does not heal and will not cure depression.

When you struggle with depression feelings of hopelessness and helplessness are powerful enough to disrupt every aspect of your day-to-day life. The impact of depression can spread to work, school, and peer and personal relationships. Unfortunately, these symptoms and emotions cannot be willed to stop, and without treatment, they may lead to worsening symptoms or co-occurring substance use disorders.

HOW OUR TAILOR-MADE TREATMENT PLANS CAN HELP

When to Get Help for Depression

Sadness is a normal human emotion. We all experience events or situations that lead to negative emotions. In most cases, unpleasant feelings such as being upset or sad resolve themselves in a few days. For someone with depression, the resolution does not generally occur. Depression is described as an illness characterized by instances of overwhelming depressive episodes. An “episode” is when someone who struggles with depression experiences symptoms that last for a minimum of two weeks before beginning to ease. However, it is important to note that symptoms may not resolve within the two-week timeframe, and for some individuals, they can last much longer. The length of each episode will vary and can be difficult to predict.

Left untreated, depression and associated symptoms can (and often does) get progressively worse. In time, living with depression can lead to significant impairment, disruption in day-to-day functioning, and in some cases, self-harm or suicide. When someone struggles with depression, they may experience periods of partial or total remission from symptoms. During these periods of remission, symptoms may be significantly reduced or even resolve entirely.

Various emotional and behavioral changes characterize depression and depressive episodes. If you or a loved one experiences any of the below or other symptoms that could signify depression, it may be time to consider seeking help for depression.

Behavioral Changes

Depressive episodes often include changes in behavior. Common behavioral symptoms of depression may include challenges with sleeping or sleeping too often, fatigue, lethargy, increased isolation, and decreased concern for personal hygiene. Other potential symptoms may be appetite changes, poor performance at work or school, new or worsening substance abuse issues, signs of self-harm, or talk of (or attempting) death or suicide.

Emotional Changes

Another characteristic of a depressive episode is emotional changes. Feelings such as anger, irritability, sadness, loss of interest in hobbies or activities, annoyance with peers or loved ones, hopelessness, and reduced self-esteem are common. Other frequently noticed emotional symptoms of depression include difficulties thinking and concentrating, memory challenges, and feelings of worthlessness or guilt.

Chronic depression can have a harmful and lasting impact on your physical health as well. Research has shown that ongoing, untreated depression has been linked to many illnesses and diseases, including obesity, heart disease, Alzheimer’s disease, hypertension, diabetes, and other chronic medical disorders.

OUR TAILOR-MADE APPROACH

What to Expect in Depression Treatment Center in Tennessee?

When you seek help at our depression treatment center in Tennessee, you can expect a comprehensive depression treatment plan that combines a range of treatment models to address your physical and emotional needs. The most successful programs include psychotherapy, medication, and supportive care.

Depression treatment is most successful when evidence-based therapies are a part of an individually designed treatment program. Psychotherapy is the broad term used to describe one of several forms of talk therapy commonly used as part of many mental health and substance abuse treatment programs. There are multiple types of talk therapy, including well-known models such as cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT) or dialectical behavior therapy (DBT). The goal of therapy is to help patients identify and understand triggers that lead to depressive symptoms. Examining triggers helps you better understand why they lead to emotional challenges. Once you develop an understanding of how triggers are linked to depression, you can change how they affect you. You can also learn new, healthier coping strategies to use when faced with triggers in the future.

Depending on your specific treatment needs, your mental health provider may recommend medications as part of your treatment team. Antidepressant medications may help reduce the intensity and severity of your symptoms, so the therapeutic portion of your treatment can be more successful. Although medications can help manage symptoms and correct any underlying chemical imbalance, they are not a standalone “cure” for depression. Therapy is a vital part of learning to manage depression.

Your treatment team will also work with you on an aftercare plan to help provide support after treatment ends. Aftercare may include participating in regular therapy sessions, group therapy, medication, and other self-care techniques. It is also important to follow a regular sleeping schedule and maintain a healthy diet. Finally, abstaining from drugs or alcohol can help reduce the potential for recurring symptoms and other potential medical difficulties. Alcohol and various recreational drugs can have adverse interactions with prescription medications resulting in dangerous and potentially life-threatening complications.

Adventure-Based Therapy

People who struggle with addiction often find themselves missing the rush. That’s why our Adventure-Based Therapy can be so effective. It produces a “natural high” that can lead you to rediscover your purpose, boost self-esteem, and decrease anxiety all without relying on alcohol or drugs.

Health & Wellness Therapies

Our whole-person approach puts a high value on both your physical and emotional health. This focus is key to lifelong change. Regular exercise trains the body to take care of itself in the right way, and self-care routines are integral to use alongside other addiction therapies.

Family Recovery Programming

Addiction can tear families apart and impact them in ways that you may not be able to see on the surface. We offer group therapy sessions to families who need extra support while they work to repair broken relationships and heal emotional wounds.

Dialectical-Behavioral Therapy

Dialectical Behavioral Therapy (DBT) is a type of Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT). Whereas CBT helps to retrain the mind to turn negative thoughts into positive outcomes, DBT helps you to find coping methods for these thoughts. DBT and CBT work together to rewire your body's learned responses.

Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy

Cognitive behavior therapy (CBT) is a type of psychotherapeutic treatment used widely in addiction treatment due to its efficacy in discovering the connection between our thoughts and our actions. This psychotherapeutic technique reteaches the mind how to process recurring thoughts and reframe them in a way that makes them more understandable and allows you to work through them instead of against them.

Trauma Intervention & EMDR Therapy

Our approach looks at our clients through a trauma-informed lens. By addressing and bringing to light past traumas, you’ll be able to limit the role they play in your life and in your recovery. Our Trauma Intervention enables you to focus on the present without sliding back into the cycle of addiction that trauma can perpetuate.

Medication-Assisted Therapy

Our staff is experienced and equipped to help you on your path to a drug-free life. We combine our expertise to create a customized and comprehensive treatment plan that will help you find your individualized path to recovery, including Medication-assisted therapies like Suboxone & Vivitrol.

Community-Focused Recovery

We believe that creating a community that connects people who are overcoming addiction is one of the most important keys to success. We are intentional about assisting each individual in connecting with local groups and people to create strong bonds of support that lead to lasting sobriety.

Support Group Introductions

Thanks to our personal experience in recovery, we understand that there is no one-size-fits-all approach to recovery.
